Materials & Safety
What our cookware is made of, how it is tested, and how to get the documentation.
What our cookware is made of
- Ceramic nonstick interior: a sol-gel ceramic coating formulated without PFOA, PTFE, lead or cadmium, applied to heavy-gauge aluminium.
- Enameled cast iron: a porcelain enamel fired onto dense cast iron — no bare-metal food contact, no seasoning required.
- Clad stainless & carbon steel: food-grade 18/10 stainless interiors and pre-seasoned carbon steel; every surface that touches food is a food-contact-grade material.
Independent laboratory testing
Our nonstick coatings, enamel finishes and other food-contact surfaces are tested by accredited third-party laboratories operating under ISO/IEC 17025. Testing covers, at minimum:
- US FDA 21 CFR 175.300 — resinous and polymeric coatings for direct food contact (migration limits, solvent and extractable tests).
- EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 — framework requirement that materials do not transfer constituents to food in quantities that endanger health.
- German LFGB — additional food-contact compliance including sensory (odour and taste) testing.
- Heavy-metal migration — lead and cadmium release tested against method-specific limits, with results below the detection thresholds of the applicable standards.
- Performance ratings — oven-safety and maximum-temperature ratings stated on each product reflect the tested specification of that product line.
Each production run is released against the same specifications; goods that do not meet the release criteria do not ship.
How to obtain the documentation
- Email support@martholm.com with the subject line "Safety documentation" (and the product name, if you want batch-specific papers).
- We reply within 2 business days with PDF copies of the current test summaries and the Declaration of Compliance (DoC) for the relevant product lines.
- Retail and marketplace partners can request the full technical file under the same address.
Safe use
Safety also depends on correct use: medium heat with a little oil for ceramic nonstick, low-to-medium heat and no thermal shock for enamel, and hand washing to keep coatings at their best. Full guidance lives in Shipping & ReturnsMaterials & Safety under "Caring for your cookware".
